Membership Social Postponed to March 13
Due to the approaching storm which will impact our region tomorrow, March 7 and Thursday, March 8, tomorrow's membership event at the Civic has been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 13.  Join us at the Civic Kitchen & Drink 5 pm to 7 pm to meet and welcome prospective members to our Club.  We'll share appetizers, fellowship and our commitment to Service Above Self with like-minded individuals from our community. Westborough School Superintendent Amber Bock will make a brief presentation.   Share your Rotary stories and, most importantly, invite a friend or associate who can help us make a difference!
John O'Connell Begins Appalachian Trek
Members may recall that last year the Club awarded Westborough senior John O'Connell a scholarship which John chose to defer for a year as a pursued several adventures.  Since we last met John, he has completed an internship at Duke University, journeyed to Vietnam and Cambodia with his mother and grandparents, and has enrolled at the University of San Diego where he'll begin classes this fall.  Today (March 6) John and his friend are beginning their Appalachian Trail hike which he expects to finish in July. We look forward to welcoming John back to our Club during August when he'll relate the story of his adventures and the Club will formally present him with his scholarship.  In the interim, you can check on the progress of John's hike by visiting his Facebook page.

Recent Club Meetings
Our last two meetings were packed with speakers and guests.  At our February 21st meeting, Dr. Harvey Kowaloff, MD told us about the need for palliative care in Africa.  It's estimated that by the year 2020, one million people will die from cancer alone in Africa, resulting in an acute need for palliative hospice care  You can see his presentation on our Facebook page.  John Gallinagh from Westborough's Veterans Advisory Board joined us and let us know that the Care Packages for Troops initiative has been extended due to a change in troop rotation. See Shelby's email of 2/28 for more specifics, and a list of the requested items which include personal care products, snacks & powdered drinks, and clothing items. A box can be assembled for $25 - $50 and will go along way to boosting the morale of our service men and women.

At our meeting of February 28, Pete Dunbeck, Chair of the Westborough Green Technology Advisory Group told us about his group's efforts to help the town become more energy efficient, reduce costs, and lower our carbon footprint.  His presentation on the Green Technology initiative is available from this link.  Retired Police Chief Al Gordon, who has been a part of the town’s police force since 1974 and was named chief in 2002, joined us to say a few words and gave a big thank you to our club for our support over the years. The new Westborough Police Chief,  Jeff Lourie, also joined us and introduced himself to our members. Chief Lourie, 51, a Shrewsbury native, has been the chief of police in Uxbridge since 2013. Prior to that, he was detective bureau commander for the Auburn Police Department, and he began his career with the Shrewsbury Police Department as a patrolman in 1998.  Jeff talked about his excitement to be in the position and is looking forward to partnering with our club and the community on a number of issues.
