Bandey-Hefler Rotary Fellowship Exchange

Dave and Judy Hall, shown here with President Shelby, told our club members about the Bandey-Hefler exchange program at our meeting on November 13.  Bandey-Hefler provides a Rotary Fellowship Exchange where Rotarians from Districts 1110 & 1145 in the United Kingdom and District 7910 in the United States visit each others' countries and are hosted by Rotarian Families in late September and early October. The program began back in 1973, when Frank Bandey, a District Governor from England was attending an assembly at Lake Placid. He was invited to attend the 50th anniversary of the Dedham Rotary Club, where he and his wife were hosted by Bill Hefler.  Later that year, the Hefler's visited England, and Bill became interested in facilitating an exchange program between the two countries.  Four years later in 1977, eleven Rotarians and their partners visited Boston for the first ever Bandey-Hefler exchange visit.  Upon their arrival, they were met by over 100 Rotarians and their spouses at a great welcoming party that set the standard of generosity and fellowship that continues to this day,

Participants travel for two weeks and are hosted by three families during their visit.  The next Exchange will take place from September 24 to October 6 in 2018 here in Massachusetts. Our District is seeking Rotarians to host travelers for a period of four days during their visit, and host families are responsible for meals and recreational activities for their guests. The experience often results in the formation of friendships that last for years, and participants say that this is truly Rotary in action at its very best.  Those Rotarians who do choose to host Exchange travelers receive first priority for a visit to the UK when the program returns to England in 2019.  You can see Dave and Judy's entire discussion on our Facebook page.  There is also an introductory video describing the Bandey-Hefler Exchange on YouTube.  For more information, or if you are interested in hosting, please contact Dave Hall.

Evening Meeting December 20

Please remember that this week is our evening meeting.  President Shelby will ring the bell at 6:15pm on Wednesday night. With no speaker and a limited agenda, we look forward to a night of fellowship in the spirit of the holiday season.

Rotary Leadership Institute

The next Rotary Leadership Institute will be held on January 20 at the Boxborough Regency Hotel.  The Institute runs from 7:30am to 3:30pm, and is designed to provide both new and experienced Rotarians information to better understand how our Club functions, as well as enhancing leadership skills.  Subjects include A Look Outside the Club, Membership Orientation and Activation,  Introduction to Leadership, Creating Service Projects and much more.  There are three levels offered, along with a graduate course for those who have completed levels I, II and III.  Tuition is $85, which will be reimbursed by the Club.  For more information on RLI and to register visit http://www.rlinea.org/ or contact our very own Dave Kaiser, the RLI District Chair! Please save your receipt and submit it to Paul Reilly for reimbursement. Please note that you must attend the session in order to be reimbursed. The deadline to register is January 10th. Those who have attended RLI agree that it is one of the best run and most useful programs offered for our members.

Holiday Gift for Sue Taft

Please remember to bring a few extra dollars to contribute to our annual gift for Sue Taft, our server at the Chateau Restaurant.  Each week Sue works hard to insure our meal service runs smoothly.  Please drop your gratuity in the hat by the door at our next meeting, or bring it by Shelby's office at Right at Home at 8 Church Street.

Worcester Railers Hockey

Join us on Friday, January 26 as we cheer on the Worcester Railers as they take on the Quad City Mallards at what's come to be known as the Chris Bakutis' Birthday Party.  The game will be played at the DCU Center in Worcester, and the puck drops at 7:05pm.  Tickets are $20, including a hat.  Contact Paul McGrath to make your reservation. Payment is due not later than January 17.
